Self Tanning Lotion Application Tips

By Haywood Hunter

If you love a dark and deep tan, you may have to spend a lot of time in the sun. However, too much sun can be bad for the skin and for your health. It is better to invest in self tanning lotion that is designed to be used indoors. This way, you can avoid skin problems associated with UV light, and here are some helpful tips for using these products.

Before you start, make sure to choose a high quality product that has excellent reviews. Also, make sure it is made for your kind of skin. Some products work well with all skin types, but make sure to read the labels. For example, you may end up with a tan that is too dark or not dark enough.

If you are a woman that shaves her legs or a man that shaves his chest, shave before you apply the product. That is the best way to insure that you get the most even tan without the possibility of streaks. In fact, one should not apply sunless suntan lotions immediately after shaving, so wait at least an hour before using.

Use a good skin exfoliant before you apply any cream to your body. You do not have to buy expensive products when a shower and brisk rubbing with a wash cloth is usually enough. You also may wish to buy a luffa or sponge. Exfoliation removes a great deal of skin cells that have died, and gives the sunless suntan product fresh new skin to work with.

After you take a bath or shower, you need to allow plenty of time for the skin to dry. This improves your chances of success. Be careful when applying the cream without some kind of protection for the palms of your hands. Skin on the palms is different that most skin on the body and palms could turn orange or yellow. Wear rubber gloves or get a tanning mitt. Of course, you can always keep washing your hands every four or five minutes, too.

Start to apply lotion on one area of your body at a time. For instance, you may wish to begin with the legs. Once you are finished with your legs, you can move on to the stomach. Places like knees and elbows may absorb lotions more readily, so you may need to use less in these parts. Also, check the label to see if the product is approved for your face.

Many sunless suntan products work best if applied in thin layers like paint. You may wish to try a small amount all over and then see what happens. You also can use a "test area" of your skin, before you begin. Choose a place that is not noticeable, apply the cream, and wait at least 8 hours. This lets you see what your tan will look like.

After application, avoid any kind of contact for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Do not get dressed for an hour or so. This is not a good day to go swimming, as most products should be on the skin for a day before you get wet. Be sure to buy the best possible products (like ones that Sun Laboratories makes) for you skin.
