Discover How To Control Bleeding After Extraction By A Rockville MD Dentist

By Lakisha Curtsinger

When you have a tooth extracted you can expect a limited about of blood. Often, bleeding in the mouth appears to be much worse than it usually is. However, a significant amount of blood may require using some tips given by your Rockville MD dentist.

First, make sure to use the gauze pads that the dentist provided. Typically, the pads should be used for three or four hours. They should be changed every thirty to forty five minutes as they become blood soaked. It is not unusual for your dentist to suggest using a damp plain black tea bag to help stop bleeding. Often the tea bag is more effective than the gauze.

You should not rinse or spit forcefully for 24 hours. Rinsing or spitting can start the socket bleeding again. You should also not drink from a straw, because the suction created can cause the socket to start bleeding. Also avoid hot items, especially soup, tea or coffee. If you must have caffeine, drink iced tea or coffee instead.

If you play any type of wind instrument, ask your dentist when you can start practicing again. This is another thing that can create pressure and start more bleeding.

Severe pain or bleeding four hours following an extraction is not normal and the dentist should be called. By this time clotting in the socket should have taken place and bleeding stopped. Keep in mind that the process may take longer when wisdom teeth are removed, however be safe and contact the dentist. The dentist will let you know if you need to go back in.

Make sure that you follow all the aftercare instructions given to help reduce bleeding and encourage healing. Remember that when you bleed in the mouth, it often looks worse than it is.
