For instance, natural honey has been proven to be very effective in the treatment of coughs. It contains a sugary fluid from the nectar. The sweetness of honey can be attributed to simple sugars from the plant. The bees are responsible for the production of honey which acts as suppressants for coughs. It must also be noted that the antibacterial qualities in the fluid help to fight against bacteria, fungi, viruses and other micro-organisms.

Individuals suffering from a persistent cough are also advised to take peppermints. It contains methanol which is very useful in clearing the throat. Mentha piperita or peppermint is a plant that is gotten from the cross between water mint and spearmint. The leaves can be eaten raw and can also be used to make tea. Peppermint flavor is found in toothpaste, chocolate, and other consumables.

The oil from thyme can be used to the problem as well. Patients suffering from acute bronchitis have been advised to include this substance in their diet. Research has also proven that sipping a cup of thyme tea can help alleviate the problem. Even thymol, which is one of the essential constituents of thyme, has been seen to reduce the germs and infections in the mouth and prevents tooth decay. It also contains carvacrol made up of flavonoids, an important antioxidant for the body.

Ginger is an underground stem and a popular food seasoning which has been considered to be a very useful remedy for the treatment of coughs. It contains various chemicals which specifically work in the intestines to reduce nausea and inflammation. It is often used to soothe the soft throat and reduce a persistent cough. Its oil can be mixed with other lemons for quick treatment and recovery.

Garlic has a pungent flavor and contains many medicinal purposes. For instance, the substance has been used in keeping the throat moist and to hydrate the nasal passage. It is an herbal plant that is considered a part of the onion family, in addition to others such as shallot and leek. A species of garlic, the solo clove, has been proven to be very effective in the treatment of difficulties arising from the respiratory system. Although people complain about its smell, difficulties such as chest cold, pneumonia, whooping cough, allergies and other pulmonary infections can be cured with it. It is eaten fresh and added to stews and other delicacies.

Grapes are also effective natural sources for the ailment. The juice from grapes acts as mucolytic expectorants. Mucolytic expectorant lightens the phlegm and makes an individual cough out a congested accumulation of debris. Grapes contain rich sources of vitamin A, B and C and are beneficial for relieving cold.
