Drug addiction is a very dangerous and complex disease that is caused by abuse of drugs. There are many harmful consequences of drug addiction to the abusers and the people around them. Quitting substance use disorder can be a very difficult process and hence the addict must have a very strong will. Treatment of drug addiction helps in dealing with effects. In relation to this, the following is an article on treatment for heroin addiction.

Feeble immune systems, gum inflammation, low capacity in sex, impotence, menstruation disturbance in women and risk of transmitting deadly contagious diseases through use of the same needle-like AIDS among others are the life threatening effects of heroin addiction. Due to this and many other reasons, it is of great importance to treat the addiction of heroin.

The treatment includes both behavioral and pharmacological treatments. The pharmacological treatment or the medication enables the user to retain the treatment program, reduce cravings, decrease the use of the drug, criminal activities and help eliminate withdrawal symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and pain. Hence, these medications are very important to the addicts trying to quit the use of heroin.

Behavioral treatments or therapies can be in an outpatient or residential kind of settings. The first step to this treatment is detoxification or what people call the withdrawal process. The patient here avoids intake of heroin and this brings many withdrawal symptoms and here is where medication is prescribed to help the addicts deal with them effectively and within a short span of time since some may be severe.

Therapy is the next step that is involved in the behavioral treatment. The patient in this step undergoes counseling where they are taught on how to deal with tempting situations and people that may lead them to using the drug again. Maintenance is the last step to this treatment and it involves follow-ups and care to the former users to ensure they maintain the and live a drug-free life.

Many lives are saved and deaths prevented through this addiction treatment. Dangerous and bad diseases like AIDS and Hepatitis C are reduced from being spread through treating heroin addiction as the addicts engage in very risky sex behaviors and sharing of needles which are the main ways they get such illnesses. Crime is also reduced and this makes communities live more peaceful.

This treatment provides both long term and short term benefits to the user like improvement of health, freedom from heroin dependency and addiction among others. By treating this addiction makes the former addicts live a better, productive and happy life. Their families too benefit from this as they are also counseled on drug addiction and how to deal and help the addicts in their families.

To sum up, we should promote heroin addiction treatment and encourage the abusers to seek treatment as if affects widely the users and the people around them. It is the duty of everyone to help in fighting against drug addiction as it is a deadly disease. Most importantly, prevention is better than cure. We should keep that in mind.
