By Helen Burns

Spider veins refer to the web-like appearance of small vessels that may be seen on calves, thighs or ankles. They are largely harmless but a number of people get concerned due to their unsightly appearance. In rare circumstances, they may be associated with a burning sensation especially if one has been standing for a prolonged duration of time. There are a number of modalities used in spider vein removal Aventura residents may wish to know of.

If you have a first degree relative with this condition, your risk of developing the same is higher than it is for the general population. Your risk will also be considerably high if your profession requires that you stand for long hours. Standing for such hours causes stasis of blood and subsequent distension of blood vessels. Other risk factors include trauma to the skin, exposure to ultra violet rays, hormonal influences and increased intra-abdominal pressure.

Compression stockings help in relieving symptoms and helping with the prominence of abnormal vessels. Some of the reasons as to why this approach is among the commonest approach for this condition is because they are readily available and are affordable. There are three main types of stockings that one may choose from. The first is a support pantyhose which provides minimal compression. The second is the gradient compression hose offering moderate compression and the third is the prescription-strength hose.

Sclerotherapy is another effective treatment that produces remarkable results. In this treatment a chemical that causes scarring of veins is injected directly into the vessels. Due to the scarring the affected vessels close and blood has to reroute to healthier vessels. Spider veins fade within a few weeks following the injection of the substance. There may be a need to inject the same vessel more than twice if the condition is very severe.

After sclerotherapy, one should wear compression stockings and should walk as much as possible. The stockings will help reduce the likelihood of side effects such as bruising, swelling and inflammation. If you are scheduled to undergo additional treatments, make sure that you engage in physical exercise regular in between the treatment to get maximal benefits.

Laser therapy has the advantage of being quite easy to administer. It does not require anesthesia neither are needles and incisions needed. A laser beam that is directed to the affected vessel causes thermal injury and scar formation. Just as is the case with sclerotherapy, these vessels are eventually blocked and fade away. Possible side effects include redness, bruising, a change in skin tone and swelling.

There are several precautions that one can undertake as ways of preventing the condition. Lifestyle changes are among the easiest to implement. In this regard, the most important is regular physical exercise. Even while on treatment, one needs to take part in physical activities that promote proper circulation of blood. Other lifestyle changes recommended include avoidance of high heels and good weight control.

Although success rates are very high with modern treatments, the problem may recur after some years. On average, recurrence occurs after about 10 years. You may need to arrange for periodic check-ups to screen for the reappearance of the problem.
