Without A Substance Abuse Counselor Chester County Pennysylvania Addicts Stand Little Chance

By Raymond Ward

One of the biggest problems facing societies all over the world is the ever increasing addiction to harmful drugs. Millions of people simply cannot live without their drugs and they will do anything to get it. Police forces do not have the resources to stem the ever increasing flow of drugs to every corner of the world. However, when truly motivated by a substance abuse counselor Chester County Pennysylvania addicts can beat addiction.

The drug related official statistics are scary. More than two and a half million emergency room cases are recorded each year. Addicts are becoming younger and younger. In fact, every single day more than two thousand kids younger than fifteen will experiment with illegal drugs. Most of them will go on to become live long drug abusers that never finish school or obtain any skills that can help them earn an income.

Drug addicts do not just destroy their own lives. All too often, they also ruin the lives of their families and their loved ones. They focus only on their next fix and to get that fix they do not care who they hurt in the process. They will steal from loved ones or even strangers. If they become desperate they can easily become dangerously aggressive.

Families need to learn what the signs indicating a possible drug problem are. A large number of drug users abruptly lose interest in sports and hobbies that used to be an important part of their daily lives. Severe and sudden mood swings should also raise a warning flag. Many addicts switch from dizzy heights of happiness to a deep depression and serious anti social behaviour within an instant.

Sudden and often dramatic weight loss is an almost sure sign of drug addiction. Many addicts alternate periods of eating almost nothing with episodes of binge eating. Most addicts suffer from insomnia and many of them will remain awake all night and sleep during the day. The often avoid social interaction and they find it very difficult to concentrate upon one thing at a time.

There are a number of physical indications that an addict is seriously ill and that he is facing a medical emergency. A constantly runny nose and difficulty to breathe is a common symptom of serious drug abuse. Many addicts have almost permanently blood shot eyes and their eyes are almost always completely dilated. Constantly shaking hands are also common. These signs are serious and should prompt an intervention.

Treatment programs for drug addicts can be very successful but only if the addict cooperates. Unfortunately, most addicts will not admit that they have a problem and no treatment under pressure or by force will help. The addict must be convinced that he can lead a better life if he is free of addiction and even then treatment may take a long time.

Unfortunately, it does not seem as if there is a solution to the ever increasing stream of drugs pouring into the streets. The supply of drugs is a very large business and those in control often have great power and influence everywhere, even in the police forces. One can but pray for some sort of solution.
