Teeth discolorations are divided into three main categories. The first and most common among the three is extrinsic tooth discoloration. This occurs when the exterior part of your teeth is affected. Secondly, there is intrinsic discoloration. This type affects the dentin which is the inner part of the tooth and mostly affects one during childhood. Too much use or exposure to fluoride, use of tetracycline antibiotics, trauma when young or on a permanent tooth that caused internal bleeding or when born with a condition known as dentin genesis. When mothers take the tetracycline antibiotics during pregnancy, this tends to also affect the teeth color.

With age, teeth tend to get discolored as a result of both extrinsic and intrinsic discoloration. As one gets old, the enamel gets thinner with time showing off the dentin. Certain foods and smoking are also culprits of discolored teeth as one advance in age.

Signs and symptoms of discolored teeth are very straight forward. If you see or happen to have any other color like dark, yellow or white spots, then those are the obvious signs of discolored teeth. Once you go to the dentist, all it takes is a look at the dentist will have the best solution laid out for you.

When it comes to treatment, there are three methods you can use to achieve your desired results. One there is in office treatment. This is the most effective needless to say the fastest. Here, all you need is to walk in, then your dentist will apply a bleaching paste then you will walk out after approximately 45 minute with the biggest smile there is. However, follow up visits are necessary.

Alternatively, you can go buy whitening products over the counter or ask your dentist to give you a bleaching gel which works together with a mouth guard. You will be required to put the gel in the mouth guard then sleep with it overnight. Though the two do not have fast result as the dentists bleaching, you will with time start noticing positive results.

Above all, even with solutions to whiten your discolored teeth, taking care that they do not get discolored in the first place is very important. Fore warned is fore armed so take all the necessary precautions and know all there is to know in preventing discoloration. For instance, make sure you brush after meals and more importantly after in taking anything that causes teeth discoloration.
