How Biotechnologies Have Shaped Science And Medicine

By Kathleen Morris

Biotechnology is any technology that is based on biology. This encompasses a huge number of things that are used in most people's day-to-day lives. By harnessing both the cellular and the biomolecular processes of living creatures, biotechnologies have many ways of improving people's lives as well as improving the condition of and lowering human impact on the planet.

People have been making use of the power of biology for thousands of years, long before anyone really knew what was going on at a molecular level. Bread and cheese are two foods that require a biological process in order for them to be made, and dairy products are preserved using a biological process. These practices could be considered precursors of biotechnology.

There are many products and technologies in the fields of science and medicine that could not exist were it not for biotechnology. One of the big ways that this has helped medicine is by making diseases easier to treat. Other ways that this has helped the world is by creating ways for needy people to get enough food, reducing mankind's overall carbon footprint, and making factories more efficient.

It would be an entirely different world for patients were it not for this type of technology. Because of biotechnology, a number of diseases can now be cured for which there was previously no treatment option. It is important to remember that the world of diseases and healthcare is constantly evolving and changing, and this type of technology is invaluable to keep combating the health threats.

People like farmers are among the many who have had their line of work impacted by developments in biotechnology. With these new technologies and products, farmers are now able to produce a higher yield than ever before, which is essential to feed the growing populations. In addition to lowering the environmental impact, this technology also helps to protect crops from harmful insects and pests.

Facilities known as biorefineries are places where biomass is studied and refined so that it can be used as fuel. Some scientists believe that this may be the future of fuel and could replace fossil fuels, or at least be one of a combination of alternatives. This fuel is renewable, and it also would help to reduce greenhouse gasses.

Diseases have the ability to adapt and change in order to combat our defenses, causing us to have to keep combating these threats. In this fight, biotechnology is essential in order to stay ahead of these health risks. One way that this technology achieves this is by lowering the overall amount of infectious diseases that are out there, which helps to save millions of lives who are taken by these diseases every year.

One of the big problems that plagues society today is how to lower mankind's environmental impact. This is a difficult problem since there are so many ways that our behavior negatively impacts the planet. By making use of biotechnology, factories can run more efficiently, fuel can be cleaner, clothes can be washed at a lower temperature, and water usage can be lowered to produce less waste.
