Professional And DIY Body Sugaring

By Roger Barnes

Body sugaring is an alternative hair removal method that many say is better than shaving and less uncomfortable than waxing. You can mix up your own sugar-lemon juice-water paste, buy a ready-made formula, or go to a spa and let trained professionals do it all for you. If you do, you'll be participating in a beauty treatment that dates back to the Egyptians.

If you have made candy, mixing up the sugar paste will not be hard. You need a very heavy saucepan and a conventional candy thermometer. For the exfoliating paste, mix two cups of white cane sugar with one-quarter cup lemon juice and one-quarter cup of water. Bring it to a boil and simmer slowly for twenty minutes or so. The mixture needs to be a dark, clear amber and to reach a temperature of 250 degrees. Allow this concoction to cool slightly and pour it into a canning jar with a lid.

This is a pretty standard recipe, but directions for use vary. Some apply the mixture as soon as it cools enough not to burn the skin; they emphasize that care is needed. Smooth the sugar-lemon goo on skin in the opposite direction of hair growth. Each hair must be coated completely with the mix.

Immediately press thin cotton strips over the paste, allow them to remain for several minutes, and then jerk the cloth free. You pull in the direction of hair growth, which makes this procedure less painful than waxing. If the mixture cools, reheat it in the microwave, again being careful not to burn yourself.

Other sites advocate using the same formula but letting it cool until it's room or body temperature. Instead of using an applicator, you smooth the formula on with your hands. After waiting a few minutes, you use your fingers to 'flick' the paste off, which removes the hair, too. Since this sounds difficult, it's good that there are informative videos online to show you how to follow whichever directions you prefer.

DIY sites say that any failure is probably improper cooking (try to go too fast and your mixture will be too sticky) or improper removal techniques. However, with practice millions of people learn to do this effectively. It is certainly wise to watch a few videos and pick the method you like best. Then try it out - or go to a spa and relax while a trained person does everything for you.

People who use this hair removal technique notice that hair grows back slowly and often stops coming back after a few treatments. Hair that does come back is softer than if it had been shaved. The sugar mixture removes dead skin cells without affecting living ones, leaving skin fresh and smooth. Those who suffer from eczema or psoriasis notice improvement.

Sugar hair removal has many fans. Check to see if a spa near you offers this alternative to waxing or shaving. Any part of your body can be 'sugared'. Or try it at home; you may never have to wax or shave again.
