Methods Of Treatment For Heroin Addiction

By Henry Williams

Heroin intake gives a downer effect to the user, it induces a relaxation state and ecstasy due to the chemical change in the human brain. Heroin just like any other opiates, blocks the brain capability to recognize pain. If one take it for too long it becomes life threatening hence treatment for heroin addiction should be done promptly. People with a prior history of drug use might be able to hide the signs and symptoms of heroin use but with time, it is evidently clear that they are using.

In order to combat this menace, one can use long-term residential treatment. This is whereby an addict commits himself or herself for six months to a year in a residential area. Care is provided daily and the model commonly used is the therapeutic community. The main purpose of this method is to help one get back to the community a better person. The social skills of an individual are improved over the period. The addict is given employment training, ways to avoid drugs and regular counselling.

The short-term residential approach can also be used to help an addict. Victims of this drug abuse are taken to a hospital where they are treated. A twelve step approach is used to treat whereby an addict is taught on various topics apart from partaking in drug use. It takes three to seven weeks before a patient is released from the hospital. Upon release, the addict is advised to go for aftercare services such as self-help groups where you get other people who might have been facing the same problem but they are on their way to recovery.

An outpatient program can also be used to care for the affected. This method is for those who have made the decision to quit the drug. It is meant for those people who are still in employment. One gives some of his or her time of day to attend the program. A counselor offers solutions on how to quit the drug and become a productive person in the society.

Individual counselling is also a way of treating an addict. It deals helps individuals to combat substance abuse and trains them how to improve their life once the therapy is complete. The lessons one takes under the guidance of a counselor include getting employment, reconciling with family members, avoiding bad company among others. One is trained how to refrain from the drug and what to do when the temptation arises.

Group counselling can also be used to help substance abusers. This type of counselling involves bringing a couple of drug addicts together who are willing to quit. Under the guidance of a counselor, they share their problems and count on one another for recovery.

There are those who are affected by the drug and even after therapy, the urge to have some heroin becomes too strong. A medication is administered to them on a daily basis. This medicine is called methadone. It kills the nerve that creates the cravings.

In order to get quality help in a rehabilitation center, one must be ready to get help. It is advisable that an individual stays away from this drug altogether. Costs incurred trying to treat a person for addiction could be put to better use.
