By Michelle King

Adult diseases are prevented, diagnosed, and treated under a branch of medicine referred to as Internal or General Medicine. Specialists are called internists or physicians. When in need of the best schools that offer Internal Medicine New York is the best place to check out. There are many medical schools in New York with the best professors in the United States. There are chances for scholarships and sponsorship for students who qualify for them.

Internal medicine as a word originated from a German term. The root term is Innere Medizin. During the entire of the 20th century, Germany saw many American doctors coming in to study medicine. When they completed their studies and went back to the United States, they carried the knowledge they had learned with them. This led to the birth of internal medicine.

Often, internists and interns are confused because the two words are close in pronunciation and spelling. It is good to know that the two are not the same thing. Internists have postgraduate education and are highly specialized in general medicine. Conversely, interns refer to doctors in their initial year of residency. Officially, the use of the term interns does not happen anymore.

There is a lot of variation in training and career pathways among internists in different countries. Each country has different requirements in terms of education and training for internists. However, in general, people who hope to become internists must complete undergraduate school, medical school, and a residency program. From there, they can seek licensure and certification. Medical school typically takes four years to complete.

Further specialization is possible through fellowship programs. This field has several sub-specialties in which practitioners can specialize. People specialize depending on their interests and capabilities in the specific subspecialty. It is possible to specialize in multiple subspecialties, but one has to attend fellowship programs for each subspecialty. However, many practitioners settle for a single subspecialty and become very knowledgeable in it.

The duties and responsibilities of internists are very many and diverse. To begin with, they are required to treat a wide variety of internal medical conditions including hypertension, heart diseases, and diabetes. They also do clerical work of analyzing patient records, test results, and reports. The diagnoses they make derive from examination information. They have training to prescribe and administer therapy and medication among other types of care.

In the United States, the certification of trained internists is done by three key bodies, that is, AOBIM, ABIM, and BCIM. Internists are certified depending on aspects such as knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The state in which one is certified issues a license of practice, which only applies to that state. Licenses only remain valid if they are renewed regularly according to requirements.

Being a successful internist takes a lot of skills and abilities. One must be able to work under enormous amounts of pressure during the day and night. Most work is done in the hospital or other kinds of medical setting. Income is often dependent on experience, specialization, location, employer, and education among other factors.
