Becoming a dentist is not a simple job. It takes several years of education and training followed by licensure and certification. There is also the option of becoming board certified for those who are interested. The American Dental Association and the Commission on Dental Accreditation are the major bodies that govern this field in the United States. The abbreviations ADA and CODA are usually used for the two organizations respectively.

Completion of a medical school is among the major necessities for one to become a dentist. In most situations, it takes 4 years to graduate, with a few exceptions existing. In the United States, accreditation of dental institutes is usually provided by both ADA and CODA. For this reason, one should join schools that are credited by these two organizations. The degree earned from an institution that is not accredited by these organizations may be invalid.

For an individual to graduate with a bachelor degree in dental medicine, they must have learned for a period of at least 4 years. However, it is compulsory for one who wants to specialize to spend an extra year or two in residency programs. Accreditation of residency programs is done by CODA and ADA just as it is done in dental schools. One should ensure proper accreditation of the residency programs they join.

There are many sub-specialties that a person training in a residency programs can select from. Such sub-specialties include oral pathology, periodontistry, orthodontisry, oral pathology, endodontistry and public health among others. Specialization is normally the major factor that people consider before choosing a dentist. This is because specialized dentists are more qualified in their field.

However, that does not mean that dentists that are not specialized are not consulted by patients. In fact, general dentists are the ones that refer their patients to specialized dentists. The referral only happens when it is necessary. As such, dentists usually maintain a close relationship with others medical practitioners for the purpose of receiving and giving out referrals. The referral network is a highly successful one in the field of dentistry.

Programs in dentistry are offered by over 50 institutions of learning in the United States. Although this number may appear big, the population of applicants grows each year. This makes the exercise of admission very competitive since only the best are accepted for admission. The various schools have almost the same admission requirements. The differences are very slight.

To be admitted, one needs to have a bachelor degree in most cases. However, a period of two years of college education may be enough in some cases. To increase chances of admission, one should participate in leadership and co-curricular activities. The ADA website usually contains a list of all accredited dental schools that one can check out.
